Paul's 2006 Report

The 4th Annual Essex Darts Golf Society, again returning to Maylands Golf Course. This proved to be the biggest event yet, with 33 people from the 34 that originally applied. The weather had improved from last year, where it rained for the majority of the day, this year we were bathed in very hot sunshine all day. This left many people red faced, or was that just the golf. The course was in extremely good condition but a lot tougher due to the fairways being tightened and the rough getting longer. For the Texas we also played the front 9 first which is the harder 9, and was proved by the winning sore being –2 this year, from –6 last (see table of results after the report). The winners of this event was were Team 3 finishing with a score of –2 and pushing Team 4 into 2nd place with –1, beating Team 6 into 3rd on a count back.
We then assembled in the Club House for lunch and some liquid refreshment, preparing for the afternoon Singles Stapleford; No team event this year. There was also a Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competitions to be contested. Peter Wiffen won the Nearest the Pin, approx 10 feet away and Keith Harding won longest Drive. There were some excellent scores again from lots of players, in the Stapleford Competition, this year with only 4 people playing above their handicap, and again some of the members of Maylands struggled, including myself. The eventual winner came in with 43 points, playing off 30. The results were as follows: Winner Pete Wiffen (30) – 43 points; Runner Up Keith Harding (13) – 39 points; 3rd Don Vickers (30) – 38 points. All 3 players have been cut for the next event, with Pete, being slashed to 23, Keith 10, Don to back to 28 and Bob Harding down to 19 from 20 (37 points). Again this year I have increased the handicaps of all players who did not achieve 30 points. Paul Ede, won the Wooden Spoon, beating last years winners into runners up. Paul received all 33 scorecards which if he studies carefully he could make one good one.
Once the golf was complete it was back to the bar for the presentation and a raffle. This raised a massive £145 extra for the Heart of Darts. A donation was received from Nick Wells, who was unable to attend this year’s event. I would like to thank my wife, Brenda for bullying everyone into the raffle and helping on the day. The total to be paid to the Charity this year is £413.50. Special thanks to our Sponsors, the Ingatestone & District and the Brentwood Borough & District Dart League's. A big thank you to everyone involved in the event, including Kevin Stammers for the admin work and all the players who attended. I am planning for the 2007 event and I hope the players who have taken part, thus far, will join us again and maybe we can get a few more, again. I will be looking at other possible venues, date and venue to be arranged as soon as possible.
